AN ARTY START FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN

The Art Gallery of South Australia today announced the introduction of a fantastic new program, START at the Gallery presented by The Balnaves Foundation, designed specifically for children and families. This free program of fun and cultural activities will be held monthly and will be launched on Sunday 5 July.

Art Gallery Director Christopher Menz said educating our children on the importance and cultural significance of the state’s collection is crucial.

“We want to engage with young people and with START at the Gallery we hope to create a new breed of art lovers which is critical to the future success of the Gallery,” said Menz.

“The Balnaves Foundation realises the value of educating children about art and their support of START at the Gallery recognises their involvement in the development of Australia’s future.”

START at the Gallery has been established to encourage wider participation in the arts from an early age and to develop the art patrons and art lovers of the future.

Providing a range of free and fun activities for all the family, START at the Gallery aims to encourage great appreciation and knowledge of the visual arts and the state’s magnificent collection.

Families are invited to enjoy shared learning opportunities encouraged by our passionate and expert guides and tutors through participation in art and craft activities, performances, live music and special Eye Spy tours.

Suited to children between the ages of 5-12 years, START at the Gallery will be held on the first Sunday of the month between 12-3pm.

This new program of activities for all the family is made possible through the generous support of The Balnaves Foundation, which aims to create a better Australia through education, medicine and the arts, with a focus on young people. The Balnaves Foundation have generously supported the Art Gallery in particular the new START at the Gallery program with a $300,000 grant over three years.

Hamish Balnaves said "The Balnaves Foundation is delighted to be working with the Art Gallery and supporting art education in South Australia”.
