Olympic organisers say the haze which has been virtually blocking out the sun in Beijing over the past few days isn't that bad.

The city's climate, especially its smog, is expected to be one of the big talking points of the Games and will be a factor in whether the Beijing Olympics is considered a success. But its not the only problem facing organisers.

Athletes village opens under cloud of smog

Basketball icon Yao Ming and more than 200 other Chinese Olympic hopefuls and officials checked into the Athletes Village today as it opened amid tight security and a shroud of smog.

Beijing Olympic organising committee chief Liu Qi handed the keys of the village to Chen Zhili, a senior communist party official who is the village mayor.
